Worcester Safe Space was launched on 15 December 2023 by Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), with support from West Mercia Police, Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion, The University of Worcester, Worcester Street Pastors, and other key organisations.
Safe Space has just celebrated it’s first anniversary! So what better time to reflect on its outstanding impact in Worcester City Centre? Through dedicated services and operational support, Safe Space has become an invaluable resource for the community.
In its first year, the hardworking Safe Space team of medical professionals has:
- Assisted with 2,629 medical, welfare and other incidents.
- Saved the NHS over £70,623 in ambulance costs across 11.5 months, easing pressure on city operations.
- Eliminated the need for 137 ambulances, averaging 12 fewer ambulances required per month.
In November alone, the team managed 472 incidents, offering vital care and support to visitors, students, residents and rough sleepers. Whether helping those in need, answering queries, or ensuring safe journeys home, Safe Space continues to prove its value to Worcester.
Expanding Services for Worcester
Safe Space has expanded its provision beyond evening operations to include daytime support, now available five days a week.
Supporting Events and Partnerships
Safe Space also plays a key role during major city events to support local businesses during their busiest time, ensuring Worcester remains a safe and welcoming destination.
Rooted in Purple Flag Success
Safe Space originated as part of Worcester’s Purple Flag accreditation, recognising excellence in managing evening and night-time economies. Now in its third year, the Purple Flag initiative, led by Worcester BID, continues to unite city partners to strengthen Worcester’s reputation and promote growth.
Looking Ahead
As awareness of Safe Space grows, so does its use. The service will continue to support the city by:
- Expanding its provisions.
- Backing more city-wide initiatives.
- Supporting University of Worcester Paramedic Students with placements to gain real-world experience.
The Safe Space team looks forward to continuing their work with the community as they enter their second year of operation in 2025.
