Local Skills Improvement Plan Update – August

This is an update on the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce’s work on the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP).

This month, the LSIP team continued connecting businesses, training providers, and educational institutions to strengthen skills and support growth across the region. We also visited a successful manufacturing business to gaining real-life insight into effective management and workforce development.

Case Study: G & O Springs – Building a Skilled and Motivated Workforce

Following our initial conversation with G & O Springs – a spring manufacturer for aerospace and safety-critical applications – we were so impressed by their initiatives that we visited them to create a case study. They are a standout example of an effective business development plan in action.

Key initiatives:

  • Touchscreen stations for self-managing skills, tracking progress, and accessing training.
  • Recognition system via Microsoft Teams, with monthly rewards for the most-praised employee.
  • Four-day work week boosting morale, productivity, and balance.
  • Values-based recruitment, prioritising behaviour over existing skills, promoting diversity and inclusion.

The results?

A more engaged, capable workforce producing higher quality output, greater efficiency, and stronger customer satisfaction, showing how investing in people drives growth.
