Step 1 – Reduce your dependency on email
For several years now, email has been the #1 method used by criminals to deceive innocent people. The best thing you can do is reduce your dependency on email. Easy ways of doing this include:
- Unsubscribing from junk mail
- Do not tick the box or untick the box when buying online or signing up online
- Use Microsoft Teams for all internal communication, leaving email for external comms only
Step 2 – Get Cyber Essentials Certification
This certification is now 10 years old and many UK businesses have achieved certification to demonstrate to their clients their commitment to digital security and digital resilience.

Step 3 – Enable Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)
All good software has a 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) as it is better known as. Turn this on! Use the Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator, and ideally on a work device (not a personal), so that if you go on holiday, off sick or leave the organisation, your colleagues can access key accounts and systems.
